WHEN OBSTACLES BECOME OPPORTUNITIES

THE OPPORTUNITY

Of the hundreds of hotel and resort projects that PGL has done, renovations always bring a series of unique challenges. Such is the case with Murrieta Hot Springs Resort.

Bringing this historic campus back into service as a premier oasis for rest and recreation included extensive restoration of infrastructure, along with the beautification that goes with such a project. This means close coordination with project management and several teams of contractors.

Rewarding challenges with stunning results?
That’s what PGL is here for!

THE EXECUTION

Each morning began with a 5:30am call with the renovation teams. With a property of this age, each day provides opportunity for unforeseen issues to rewrite the day’s plan, and this daily planning session was crucial to keep progress on track. This effort allowed the PGL team to adjust their plans on the fly as well as navigate details like California’s stringent waste management regulations.

To illustrate the ever-evolving nature of this project, the 1 month timeline was necessarily expanded to 3 months. To accommodate this moving target, Conex containers were moved to the property for short-term storage to supplement the off-site warehousing services implemented.

Agility is a key component of how PGL does business, and just one of many examples of this on display involved the FF&E installation on the second floor of historic buildings with narrow stairways and no elevators. To do this, upstairs balcony railings were removed, so that a forklift could hoist large armoirs into the rooms.

Another example lies in the expansion over time on the 46 acre property, resulting in over 30 different guest room blueprints that needed to be accommodated.

THE OUTCOME

Navigating such a complex project is exactly what we’re here for and the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort is a perfect example of evolving scope and managing unforeseen obstacles. This included coordination with general contractors and subcontractors like electricians and plumbers, and 24/7 operation, including holidays.

Almost 10,000 separate items including furniture, televisions, fixtures, artwork and more totaling over 1 million dollars worth of products were obtained, warehoused and installed to bring this historic property back into service as the Southern California oasis that it once was.

With PGL, we view obstacles as opportunities, and we are proud to have contributed to the success of this project.

Real life adventures in simulator moving

THE OPPORTUNITY

In our extensive experience moving flight simulators, we have found that attention to detail makes all the difference. Such is the case with this series of 6 moves, from the older SIMCOM facility to their new campus located in Orlando Florida.

Due to the delicate nature of the technology and hardware, a complex process that includes a detailed bid and extensive planning, along with execution in the form of disassembly, crating, rigging, transport, delivery and reassembly.

THE EXECUTION

As with any move of this scope, work begins with exhaustive planning to ensure that every detail is accounted for and every possible variable is addressed before any steps are taken. Additionally, the moves must be scheduled around the booking of each simulator to ensure that it is out of service for the shortest duration possible.

Once the plan is in place, we begin by sending an engineer to spend a few days to do a baseline test. Here, all functions of the simulator are run through their paces and functionality is verified.

After engineer signoff, a team is activated to dismantle the simulator. This tear-down phase includes the sourcing and utilization of multiple pieces of heavy equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and in this case, a crane.

Because of the size and sensitivity of this equipment, it must be crated and rigged to protect the expensive technology so that it arrives safely at the destination.

As part of the crating and rigging, the entire unit is covered in marine wrap to keep the simulator clean and dry, even if this particular unit won’t be sent on an ocean voyage. Crating materials were also saved and reused for future moves to save on materials, enabling PGL to share the savings with the customer.

One of the more memorable moments on this move included fitting the 15 foot, 10 inch mirror crate through a door that was 16 feet wide. This is a great example of how proper planning prevents poor performance, but those 2 extra inches certainly kept us on our toes.

Once loaded on the double drop trailer to accommodate the extra wide load, 4 Florida Highway Patrol officers escorted the truck to the new facility.

Noteworthy Data

  • Total Weight: 17,000 pounds
  • Simulator Mirror: 15’ 10” Wide, 22’ Length 11’ High with a weight of 3,500 pounds
  • 10 Days to tear down, 1 day to load and move, 1 day to unload and 15 days to reassemble

THE OUTCOME

When you consider the depth and breadth of a move like this, it’s dizzying to imagine the teams of operators, engineers, crate builders, not to mention the array of heavy equipment necessary to accomplish the task, even when the simulator is only going 30 miles to its new home.

Regardless of the distance, the application of this level of expertise and a successful, safe delivery is extremely rewarding, and a big reason why moving complex, sensitive equipment like a simulator is some of our favorite business.

Urban Air

Where Fun Takes Flight!

Urban Air is the Ultimate Indoor Adventure Park where kids of all ages (and kids at heart) can explore thrilling attractions, challenge their body and mind, and most importantly… have a blast! Much more than a trampoline park, Urban Air has led the charge when it comes to indoor adventure parks.

Urban Air is part of the portfolio of Unleashed Brands, the parent company that consists of six family-friendly brands and over $820M in systemwide sales and over 1,500 franchises.

“PGL streamlines the shipping process for our franchisees, from direct coordination to ensuring each product is handled with the highest level of care, allowing our teams to focus on the big picture. Laura and the entire PGL team are a trusted partner and they are a joy to work with.” – Ryan Slemons, Chief Development Officer, Unleashed Brands

The Opportunity

Urban Air is a franchiser on the move. With over 60 parks opening in a given year, they needed assistance with the coordination of large equipment freight from Asia to their new adventure parks across the United States. In addition to the trans-Pacific logistical challenges,

this engagement is also about managing relationships. From communication with the franchiser, manufacturing overseas, and new franchisees that are eager to see their investment lead to financial success, this is about more than getting containers from one place to another. This is PGL Personal Service.

The Execution

At any given time, there are over 100 park projects on the books at various stages, from freshly-signed contracts to new parks only days from opening, leading to a system where every park is in a different stage of development. For each park, the process begins with meticulous planning to ensure that the timeframe fits with the other concerns for a new opening. The equipment must arrive when the space is ready, and no owner wants to see a completed space sitting empty, so the delicate dance to have multiple containers arrive for installation begins 4 months before a park opens. If you have any experience in the logistics industry, you know that issues and delays can and do happen, and what a daunting task it can be to thread this needle. That’s where experienced operators like PGL’s Laura Clanton come in. Not only does she lead the team that makes this effort happen, but she does so while being in constant communication with the franchisees that want to see their business dreams come to fruition, hopefully without delays.

PGL Services Utilized

  • Coordination with Point of Origin Logistics
  • Trans-Pacific Freight
  • Customs
  • Rail and Truck Transportation
  • A New Level of White Glove Service

The Outcome

Dozens of parks per year, each culminating with a week of deliveries for every park with a minimum of 7 containers full of equipment and a total timeline of less than 6 months for each location, start to finish. This is the equation that leads to more than 60 shipments on the water at any given time.

Add to this math that for each store, there is an anxious new business owner with Laura’s direct number, and you can see that this is a shining example of PGL taking “White Glove Service” to an entirely new level.

  • Government

  • Hospitality
  • Industrials

  • Pharma & Healthcare
  • Tradeshow
  • Retail

The soothing science behind the scary fun

THE OPPORTUNITY

To help bring this seasonal pop-up store to life meant that there were exciting challenges to overcome. Working closely with the Spirit Halloween team, PGL was able to create a fully customized solution that found new levels of efficiency in the process, and next-level visibility into inventory and warehouse management.

From here, we look at what it takes to get a season’s well-organized inventory into each retail location on time and with exacting precision.

THE EXECUTION

As with any complex receiving, warehouse management and outbound operation, perfection is found in preparation.

Engineering the processes involves identifying and implementing the software and hardware that makes it all possible. In this case, this included integrating Spirit Halloween’s preferred bar code scanning platform, Zebra, with our Deposco WMS. With these two critical components working in harmony, this allowed us to follow best practices while remaining agile and able to change processes and functions as the customer needs.

Along with this flexibility, we gained visibility that led to the ability to identify potential issues well in advance, and make adjustments before they became problems.

For each location, a picksheet is sent to the warehouse, indicating which pallets need to be pulled for the next truck. Each pallet label is scanned and a warehouse crew of 3 people break down the pallets and load the truck, floor-to-ceiling.

This process takes about 2.5 hours to completely fill the truck. Driver information is gathered and a Bill of Lading is generated. The doors are sealed, and the truck is sent on its way.

Thankfully, with each location’s inventory pre-sorted and ready to roll out, this monumental task was not only possible, but brought a new level of confidence to proceedings, allowing each store to set up well in advance.

Notable Numbers

  • Over the course of 4 months, accepted 85,000 inbound shipments
  • Distributed to over 30 locations
  • 77 separate outbound truckloads

THE OUTCOME

Custom solutions and the right people make all the difference, as proven by this engagement that is the first of many spooky seasons to come, keeping Spirit Halloween the one-stop shop for Halloween fun!

Halloween should be scary, but your 3PL solutions don’t have to be

THE OPPORTUNITY

Have you ever wondered how a seasonal pop-up store like Spirit Halloween can seem to appear out of nowhere, taking a vacant retail space to a bustling store practically overnight?

The answer isn’t as mysterious as what you may find inside, as it comes down to the efforts of a well-organized company and the partnerships that they leverage to make it all happen. This is more simple to say than it is to execute, of course, with hundreds of stores, thousands of SKU’s and millions of individual products, there are plenty of challenges to face and problems to solve. That’s where PGL comes in.

THE EXECUTION

Part of the complexity inherent in a project such as this lies in the kitting involved in grouping a dazzling array of products at the individual store level, making sure that each location is delivered a full inventory that is as accessible as possible. This process starts when we receive inbound shipments: utilizing a conveyor, the boxes are unloaded with labels facing out and sorted into different paletts, one for each store location, and the new inventory is entered into the WMS (Warehouse Management System).

In this case, we paired the Depasco WMS to handle warehouse inventory with the customer’s preferred scanning system, Zebra. This is where we really get to shine, showcasing the adaptability that is central to PGL operations, we were able to create a workflow that maximizes the effectiveness and visibility provided by these two disparate systems.

The newly sorted and palletized product is packed efficiently into our warehouse racks and ready for distribution.

PGL Services Utilized

  • Coordinating transportation for inbound warehousing and outbound distribution
  • Established effective receiving and fulfillment processes, including kitting
  • Deployed an advanced warehouse management system to facilitate inventory management
  • Paired the WMS with the Zebra scanning system

THE OUTCOME

PGL was able to install fully-customized, full-scope solutions that bring order and efficiency to this seasonal retail giant’s annual efforts to be the one-stop shop for Halloween fun!

Texas Rangers – Case Study

The Texas Rangers are a major league baseball team based in Arlington, Texas in the heart of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The Rangers compete in the American League West division and have been playing in Arlington since 1972.

PGL Services Implemented

This relationship involves ongoing coordination and shipments to and from Spring Training in Surprise, Arizona, moving the team equipment for every away game and warehousing and fulfillment of game promotional items. This allows us to use our logistics skills in multiple disciplines including:

  • Logistics Planning Loading and transport
  • Warehousing and management
  • Inventory and fulfillment

THE OPPORTUNITY

Moving the equipment to support an entire Major League Baseball team to off-site spring training and 81 away games per season is no small task. Additionally, home games include promotional giveaways that must be received, inventoried, warehoused and distributed.

As the Official Logistics Partner of the Texas Rangers Baseball Club, PGL is responsible for coordinating and executing on the effort to move that supporting equipment and manage those promotional items so that the team can keep their collective eyes on the ball.

THE EXECUTION

Each year, the buildup for the season starts with Spring Training. Moving all of the supporting equipment to sustain the team for 37 days may be a tall order, but PGL has worked with the organization to bring this daunting effort from an all-day slog to an efficient 2 hours. To do this, PGL logistics operators reengineered the process, implementing a palletized system that greatly improves time efficiency and removes a tremendous burden on the team from an operational standpoint, requiring far fewer people to execute.

Away games require a similar, if smaller, effort to move equipment with an initial move often beginning while the team is still on the field during a home game. A smaller collection of equipment used in the game is gathered after the last inning and added to the shipment that will support the team at their next game.

Along with game equipment, we have the warehousing and fulfillment of home game promotional giveaways. To allow for more control and availability, these items have moved from “just-in-time” supply chain methodology to “just-in-case”. These giveaways are received at our warehouse, inventoried and stored until game day when they are delivered to Globe Life Field, packed with rabid fans. As with all of our services, this is made possible with PGL personal service, working directly with team representatives to ensure that there are no surprises.

THE OUTCOME

Faster, more efficient with the personal touch that leads to peace of mind. PGL is proud to support the Texas Rangers and to put our skills to work, doing our part to to support the great game. From project management to successful delivery and everything in between, PGL has the experience to provide intelligent solutions that go beyond 3PL with full-service delivery on a global scale.

Grainger / State of Connecticut

The Opportunity

The State of Connecticut was in need of a supply chain solution within a timeframe that did not allow for the timing usually necessary to follow standard procurement processes. Details about the move include:

  • Conducted from May 9 to May 31, 2022
  • Empty a 160,000 square foot warehouse
  • Conduct inventory during move-out, separating active inventory from surplus
  • Install on-going inventory management system
  • Establish expiration date visibility
  • Move 7730 pallets on 254 truck loads

The Execution

For this program, PGL has teamed up with Grainger, a giant in the industrial supply industry, which has proven to be an invaluable partnership. Together, in extremely challenging circumstances, we were able to able to complete the move on time, while simultaneously conducting wall-to-wall inventory and capturing required stock unit attributes and effectively managing the PPE stockpile to better fit needs of the state of Connecticut. This included accurate reporting of inventory, installing means for fulfilling orders, creating custom dashboards to track consumption rates, expiration dates, and measuring date of expiration vs. inventory depletion rate.

PGL services utilized:

  • Coordinating transportation for the move to a new warehouse twenty miles away
  • Deployed an advanced warehouse management system to facilitate inventory management
  • Designed reporting and analytics dashboards leading to informed decision making with regard to inventory
  • Installed an ordering system allowing for ease of order input and offering greater visibility and book keeping
  • Established effective receiving and fulfillment processes, including cycle counting
  • Added more effective picking solutions within the WMS such as pick waves, leading to increased efficiency
  • Staffing and personnel services

The Outcome

PGL was able to partner with Grainger following the state’s guidance and utilize an existing NASPO ValuePoint Agreement that allowed us to bring to market a solution in record time while eliminating the Request for Proposal (RFP) process.

In the face of adversity, PGL gets it done.
